A few notes about registering for classes with
The Foster Woods Folk School
All Foster Woods Folk School courses are offered online. We offer "live" classes that include Zoom meetings with classmates and the teacher and "flex" classes that are asynchronous and do not include live meetings.
— INTERACTIVITY: Live semester classes are highly interactive and center around discussion and group activities. For students who prefer less interactivity, flex classes are suggested. Flex classes are asynchronous and do not include live meetings.
—STUDY HALL: Students enrolled in semester courses, live and flex, are invited to attend study hall, which is held on most Monday and Wednesday evenings during the semester. There is no class fee for study hall. Study hall is when students can get extra help with assignments, ask questions, work with classmates on group projects, or log in and work on homework with other learners.
— WORKBOOK: Students enrolled in elementary and middle school courses, live and flex, will receive a virtual interactive workbook before the course begins. The workbook is created using Google Slides. Students will complete homework in the workbook, and the teacher will provide feedback on homework in the workbook. Students enrolled in high school courses will receive a link to a Google Drive where they will complete homework, and the teacher will provide feedback.
— LETTERS OF COMPLETION: At the end of courses, a letter and certificate of completion is provided for all students who have earned a C or better in the course. The goal is for every student to successfully complete the course. Learning is not about doing every assignment perfectly every time. We will work together to improve throughout the course. Students who engage and complete homework will earn an A.
— FINANCIAL BARRIERS: If the class fee is a barrier to your student’s enrollment, please message the school for more information about payment plan options and scholarship opportunities. We will most likely respond by asking you what fee would make the course accessible for your student. We will work together from that point to find a way to make the course financially accessible.

LIVE COURSES
Live elementary school courses begin Monday, September 18, 2023 for the 2023-2024 school year. There is a two-week fall break beginning October 23, a one-week break for the Thanksgiving holiday, a month-long winter break beginning December 18, and a two-week spring break beginning February 26. Elementary live courses complete mid-April.

There is a one-week fall break beginning October 30, a one-week break for the Thanksgiving holiday, a month-long winter break beginning December 21, and a one-week spring break beginning March 1. Middle school live courses complete mid-May.
"A Young People's History of the United States" is a 12-week, single semester course offered in both the spring and fall semesters. In the fall 2023 semester it begins mid-September and completes December 21. There is a one-week fall break and one-week Thanksgiving break. In the spring 2024 semester it begins mid-January and ends mid-April. There is a one-week spring break.

THE CRUCIBLE: CAMP FOR SCRIPT READING AND DISCUSSION
This is a five-day camp where learners read and discuss Arthur Miller's four-act 1953 play The Crucible while learning more about the Puritans, the Witch Trials, and McCarthyism and analyzing the work through anti-racist and feminist lenses.
Camps are offered during semester breaks.

ACT: Animal Club for Tweens&Teens
Five chapters of ACT: Animal Club for Tweens&Teens meet. The chapters include members from around the world and are made up of young people who care about animal rights and animal welfare issues. Each chapters meets weekly during the semester.

The EcoSocial Justice Club is for middle school or high school students who are enrolled in or who have completed a Foster Woods Folk School history or social studies class.

CAMP: ALL ABOUT ANIMAL SHELTERS AND RESCUES
This is three-day virtual camp for elementary and middle school aged learners. It introduces learners to different types of animal shelters, rescues, and sanctuaries, and explores the history of and careers in animal shelters and rescues. It also discusses the need for spaying and neutering non-human companion animals.
